How to Write a Job-Winning Cover Letter in East Africa

Most job seekers skip the cover letter — but a strong one can be the difference between getting an interview and being ignored. Here is exactly how to write one that gets noticed.

Why a Cover Letter Matters

Even if the job advert does not ask for one, sending a cover letter shows initiative. Recruiters in East Africa receive hundreds of CVs for every role. A cover letter gives you 30 seconds to explain why you — not anyone else — should get the interview.

The Right Structure

Keep it to one page. Three short paragraphs is enough.

Paragraph 1 — Who you are:
State your name, the role you are applying for, and where you found it. One or two sentences only.

Paragraph 2 — Why you are the right fit:
This is the most important part. Pick two or three specific achievements from your CV and connect them directly to what the employer needs. Use numbers where possible.

Paragraph 3 — Call to action:
Thank them for their time, express genuine interest, and say you would welcome the opportunity to discuss further.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Starting with "I am writing to apply for..." — too generic

  • Copying your CV word for word

  • Making it longer than one page

  • Not addressing the specific company or role

  • Spelling and grammar errors — always proofread twice

A Sample Cover Letter

Dear Hiring Manager, I am applying for the Accountant position advertised on LinkedIn. With five years of experience in financial reporting for manufacturing firms in Nairobi, I have consistently delivered accurate monthly statements and reduced audit preparation time by 30%. I am confident I can bring the same rigour and efficiency to your team. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss my application further. Thank you for your consideration.

Tips Specific to East Africa

  • Always mention your availability to start

  • If applying for a role in UAE, mention your passport status

  • Reference any local certifications — CPA(K), ACCA, NEBOSH

  • Keep language professional but warm — formal without being cold

  • Follow up by WhatsApp or email after 5 business days if you hear nothing
